| ARTERO BREL |
|
Patrick Artero and his acolytes have concocted a CD which is…
musically incorrect, where Brel dances upon dissonance, where jazz
gives out another new tempo to the flat rhythm currently heard. Remy
Kolpa Kopoul, ConneXionneur, Radio Nova, Paris.

Brel is words :
« …
Patrick Artero has struck an artist deal with Nocturne. With his
young accomplice Sébastien Vidal (programmer of TSF, THE
Jazz radio), an established artistic director, they ponder upon the
project. Artero is not afraid of being labeled as « the
man of the repeats. » They go over all the chanson
française. Patrick first thinks of Paul Misakri, whose version
of L’étang by Blossom Dearie obsesses
him, but Ray Ventura’s accomplice is a bit forgotten.
Brassens ? Already done with the Haricots Rouges. Ferré ?
To be frank, he doesn’t know him well enough. So what about
Brel ? He plunges and replunges into his complete work. He
leaves aside the anti-religious songs ( Si j’étais
le Bon Dieu , Les cathédrales ), and
the easy hits Rosa , Les bonbons , Ne
me quitte pas . He starts with sixty, then forty, then
finally twenty themes. The new version of Brel is real big deal !
The bass player-arranger Vincent Artaud starts working on it. Where
the Bix used to be played in quartet, for Brel, Vincent Artaud
proposes, on top of the rhythmics, a completely new sonority which
gives the project all its remarkable nature: trombone, bassoon,
clarinet, flute and viola. It is neither baroque, nor precious, but
festive and classy, with an infinite range of reflections. Whereas
Artero gives the tone, Artaud gives the colours. A real criminal
conspiracy. Now we only need a goldsmith’s rhythmics, plus the
dazzlingly talented note carver named Giovanni Mirabassi and finally
an unexpected spicy bonus guest accelerating the heart beat, with the
effusive large hands of the Argentinian percussionist Minino Garay.
Now you just need to come to the surface of words, or even make them
blossom again on this lavish couch. Le cousin Gaspard, la Mer du
Nord, les Flamandes who dance, wordless…Patrick Artero and his
acolytes have concocted a Cd musically… incorrect where Brel
dances upon dissonance, where jazz gives out a new tempo to the flat
rhythm currently heard. » Rémy Kolpa Kopoul. ConneXionneur Radio Nova - Paris
