« Giovanni Mirabassi : insurrectional music!
For this album, Giovanni Mirabassi says he drew his inspiration from Riccardo Muti conducting Verdi’s Nabucco at the Rome Opera for the 150 year-celebration of the Italian Reunification (2011). After Va pensiero, the slaves’ song which is a kind of symbol of freedom for the Italian, the audience called for an encore and Riccardo Muti turned to them and said live on the air of the RAI : « Exceptionally, I will do it for you, but as an Italian citizen who has travelled all around the world, I must say I feel ashamed of what is going on in my country and if we do nothing to save our culture, we will destroy all that has contributed to the making of Italian history ».The audience then burst into thunderous applause and started chanting VIVA V.E.R.D.I. and this in the presence of Berlusconi! VIVA V.E.R.D.I. is the acronym of Viva Vittorio Emanuele Re d’Italia, the rallying cry of Garibaldi’s followers for the Italian reunification in 1849. »

« …the disciple of Bill Evans pays tribute to a composer who symbolizes the intensity of American jazz culture. The music is lyrical, elegant and desperate: Mirabassi and his dazzling virtuosity and sensibility brings the music back to the heart of the city. »
Christian Larrède – Jazz News – 30 April 3013
« After Adelante ! recorded in Havana in 2011, Italian pianist Giovanni Mirabassi set out for South Korea (the Goyang Aram Concert Hall in Goyang) for the recording of his new album VIVA V.E.R.D.I. live with his faithful friend musicians Gianluca Renzi on double bass and brilliant Cuban drum-player Lukmil Perez Herrera. The trio is accompanied by the 31 members of the Bee String Orchestra conducted by Lorenzo Pagliei.
(…) Giovanni Mirabassi sends out a cry of love and revolt addressed to Italy « suffering so much today ». For this pianist exiled from Italy, VIVA V.E.R.D.I. is the equivalent of Le temps des Cerises for the French. In this new album under the prestigious record label CAM, the artist unveils new compositions and a new version of « Bebè » by Hermeto Pascoal and « Arirang », a kind of non official Korean anthem.
A revolt treated with exacerbated romanticism; themes of intense beauty where the delicate or explosive rhythm of the jazz trio meets perfectly the string orchestra’s lyrical flights. Great music reminiscent of Bill Evans to whom Giovanni Mirabassi paid tribute very recently on the Parisian stage.
Editorial fipradio – 4 March 4013
With VIVA V.E.R.D.I., his latest opus, there is still a scent of revolution, the rallying cry of the Carbonari and the anti-Austrian insurrection, henceforth associated with Riccardo Muti’s cultural revolt on stage - before replaying Va Pensiero, for the 150 year- celebration of the Italian Reunification, Muti turned to the audience with government officials present at the event and made a speech about the disastrous situation of Italian culture. The audience started chanting VIVA V.E.R.D.I. Giovanni Mirabassi has associated himself to VIVA V.E.R.D.I. by choosing this rallying cry as the starting point of his new album, this time surrounded by « 30 strings » and in South Korea to boot. Giovanni Mirabassi, the committed musician, interpreted his new opus for the very first time over there – an opus full of revolutionary notes!
Lea Raso, Nouvelle Vague
« To me, Giovanni Mirabassi is the best jazz pianist in the world… Each album is a moment of intense emotion…with which we travel very, very far away, beyond words, beyond the boundaries of our imagination… VIVA V.E.R.D.I. but mostly viva Giovanni!
Eric Barbara, jazz portraitist
