Mélanie Dahan transforms nice famous French songs into jazz standards without any nostalgia. From "Bal perdu" to "La princesse et le croque-notes", her unique voice gives new life to these well-known tunes, "long long after the poets have disappeared". She returns to famous texts or on the contrary to unknown texts by Brassens (to whom she literally borrows the title of her album) or by Dimey, Nougaro, Aznavour and even Ferré !
In this first album, she is accompanied by jazz pianist Giovanni Mirabassi. One still remembers his solo album Avanti! consisting of improvisations based on revolutionary songs and his "Victoires du Jazz" in 2002. He is today a jazz pianist of international stature. With them, Marc-Michel Le Bévillon on the bass, Matthieu Chazarenc on the drums, and as a guest, the very inspired saxophonist Pierrick Pédron who plays on just two tracks.
No false notes or exaggerated effects for this refined quartet.
The Princess and her "Croque-notes" offer us a subtle form of jazz. Their approach to the répertoire of the genuine Chanson française is fine and elegant and the result is something fresh and invigorating. Estelle Laurentin
The princess is accompanied by a fine array of stars like Dimey, Aznavour, Ferré, Brassens… She follows the steps of yesterday's greatest artists and surrounds herself with those of today. She sets her jazz phrasing in the old paths of the Chanson française and from there she creates her own repeats which she subtly turns into jazz standards. Without any touch of commemoration, she restores the quintessence of the texts and the melodies in a sober and delicate way, putting all her soul in singing those repeats.
There is a great unity of tone in this album, in which the melodies come to life thanks to the interpreter's great sensitiveness. It is an album which is at the same time grave and profound, light and fresh, refined and warm. The result is beautiful and generous. J.D-L |
